Research at the Museum

Research has been at the heart of the Museum of Pontevedra’s work since its beginnings. Obtaining an in-depth understanding of its collections, their historical context and the buildings that house them are the foundations on which the conservation and dissemination of heritage are built. The Museum therefore regards research as an ongoing task, nourished by the work of its technical staff and through collaboration with universities, research centres and specialists from different fields.

Apart from studying its own collections, this institution develops lines of work around Galician art, new perspectives on museology, the role of education in museums, innovations in conservation and restoration, and the relationship between art and exile in Galicia. These areas of research are supported by a year-round programme of lectures, conferences and seminars that bring together specialists and people interested in these subjects to share new insights and discuss them.

This section provides information about the research room, with access to the Museum’s library, archives and documentation, as well as details of scheduled seminars and conferences. Since 1942, this centre has published a journal featuring research articles on its own collections, history, art history and heritage in general. Moreover, this publishing activity is complemented by catalogues and monographs.

Thus, the Museo de Pontevedra aspires to be a space open to research and the exchange of ideas, serving both the research community and anyone interested in our historical and artistic heritage.
